Gary Gygax finally misses his saving throw vs. Death Magic

As we mourn the loss of a very influential man, Gary Gygax.
Gary Gygax RIP
This blog is dedicated to Gary Gygax, who passed away today. Gary Gygax, was more influential on modern culture than most people would know, as a lot of normal people wouldn’t know him. Gygax is the co-creator of the Dungeons and Dragons(D&D) role playing system and co-founder of TSR Inc. He is the father of the role playing genre.
Way back in 1971, there was a system calledChainmail, that he developed, and D&D was developed out of that, publishing a first edition in 1974. You can read his whole history or at Wikipedia.
What Gygax did was introduce a new kind of gaming to the world. One that did not involve a gameboard, or even extensive pieces. Just a rule book or two, some paper, some multi sided dice, and you imagination. Gygax was one of the first guys to make geekdom cool, he as well as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Einstein, made geek eventually, no longer really and insult.
Gygax is also hugely responsible for the resurgence of JRR Tolkein in the 70’s and 80’s, basic much of his game on Tolkein’s ideas about fantasy. Gygax is also responsible in part for the video game age; many of them today are still trying to get the RPG elements right, and I have yet to find a video game more enjoyable than a pen and paper RPG.
I have been playing RPG’s since I was about 9. And since that time, when my cousin Franco introduced me to them, and I was given the basic rules as a gift at about 10 or 11, I have played some type of RPG’s (sorry I don’t remember who gave them). I have been playing with my brother and the Angry Piper in some form or the other over the past 20+years. And I have played a ton of them. From D&D, Boot Hill, Top Secret, Gamma World, Shadowrun, Vampire, GURPS, Toon, Heroes Unlimited, Rifts, Call of Cthulhu, MERP, and many more, but I always came back to D&D.
RPGing has taken up a significant portion of my life, and I still love playing, and I owe it all to Gary Gygax (and my cousin Franco).
Home Improvement Almost Done
Just got to touch some of it up, and get the wall decorations back up. Pics tomorrow.
Yeah.
So even in Fairhaven we have nuts, though he was probably from New Bedford.
While not as sad as Gary Gygax
Gotta wish Brett Favre a happy retirement (we’ll see).
The Mood of Red Sox Nation
I’m too sexy for my pants, too sexy for my pants . . .
Todays Primaries
Well the Albino Midget has done it, your new GOP Candidate . . John McCain. And it looks to be a real pressure cooker in the Obama Clinton race.
The Head Wikinazi
Wow, people almost hate him as much as the mindless drones at Wikipedia.
Here we go.
Yep, Hugo Chavez, recreating the Middle East in South America! Give that man a Nobel Prize.
Moses
The junkie.
Malach’s Video of the Day
This is dedicated to Tequila Mockingbird.
I am Malach, and beautiful f*cked up man.

I want to name my kid Brett.
Wow, only 69…that is pretty damn young in todays standards.
I never got into D&D, but every boy on our street growing up did. I only got creeped out when I saw the really er, to put it nicely “dorky” and “single” groups of guys in their 30’s still living at home with mom and dad who spent all their time playing that game rather than getting a job.
Cool video – haven’t heard that song in a while.
I have no experience whatsoever of Dungeons and Dragons – I am a D&D virgin :-O x
The Favre retirement took me by surprise. I’m not sure I would want to go out on that INT, but I’m sure he’s just worn out by football at this point.
You are such a nerd.
Brett Favre forever.
I would have 10,000 of his babies.
Rag: A little infatuated are we?
MI: Yeah, I was a but surprised, but eveidently he has been ill for past couple years. Never played? Your loss, though I haven’t found many chick who enjoy it.
Kitty: Many girls are, I figured someone might like my vid.
Angry: I think he might be back. For example, how many teams could use him in his own division?
I bow to your superior geekery. All hail Malach!
I played a little D&D as a teenager. But it required more of an attention span than I was willing to give it. Still, no doubt it shaped a part of my being and the whole culture.
ahahahaha Chavez is crazy, but heck he is smart than what I thought.
I think that he is scared that after he finishes his presidential therm USA or others might want to kill him, now without a possiblility of be a dictator he will be doomed, tied up and kicked to the street.
He needs to make up something.
In the other hand Colombian President (like any of us doesn’t bite his crap) colombians tracked the activities btw venexuela & Ecuador they realized these countries were helping the Guerrilas and were well involved supporting the kidnappings and releasing of victims… Oh Colombia did the best move entering Ecuador and bombing that camp. yes maybe not right by law but why the heck was Colombia going to ask Ecuador permision to bomb the place if Ecuador is supporting the guerrillas? ifthat was the case Clombia would never possibly been able to find these guys. It had to be done this way, now colombia has all info they found in Computers left at the camp prooving that Venezuela & Ecuador was indeed helping guerrillas, they even found Uranium in the camp lol
Is soooo funny have Chavez making a minute of silence for Guerrilla leader killed named (raul) lol lol that is the funniest joke I heard this year…
Is funny how Ecuador is also acting like they were victims they even tried to lure Peru’s president into this matter, thank God Peru’s president was not a dumb guy.
wow, this is sooo funny and not funny at the same time.
and here i thought i reached the pinnacle of geekdom by finally getting on IRC the other day. i’m more of a magic girl as opposed to D n D.
and you are forgiven. dont do it again.
I bow to your nerdiness.
D&D came out a little after the time I might have gotten interested in it but still I knew a lot of people that got totally lost in the game.
Mal,
Hey hey… you drop a comment about MY reruns? What’s that got to do with helping people? You do more than I do and I’m surprised you think my posts are invalid for being restated.
Mike. I pissed you off by being harsh a while back. I appologized. If you want to talk it out, I’ll be sincere in my apology for insulting you. I took your caustic humor as a sign I could push a bit and not offend. I fucked up. Sorry.
I’d love to see what the web bots make of your blog, Mal. Good work confusing the vast machine!
Murk–I also apologize to you for my reaction. Perhaps had I known you a little better, I would not have over-reacted the way I did. Thanks and here’s to the joy of burying the hatchet.
Tiff: BEHOLD THE POWER OF MALACH
Phoebe: Come join our group
Toyi: You want to marry Chavez don’t you
Mocky: IRC? Nevermore
Mike: And back then, your weren’t cool if you played it
Dr. Murk: Just playing the part, I will post search phrases just for you tonight
Mike: you and Murk need a room?
Ohhhh boy. Wikifucked.
xOdaraP!
Wow. Your grammar is crap. Have someone with better than a 5th grade education check your blog entries before you post them.
