Hey kids, don’t do crack
So, what did I do today? MI likes to call me every so often and compare our clients, who are similar to ones I work with. Here’s one I did today. One of our clients has been missing since last Thursday. She left her three kids alone (ages 16, 10, and 
and disappeared. Luckily her mother and father live in the city, so they figured out she was gone by Friday night and took the kids. Now, this client is Bi-polar, and has past addiction issues, mainly with crack. I have worked with this client for a number of years; she has been in one of our residential programs for three years; she graduated high school with my wife, same year; her youngest go to the same grade school as mine; she is very pretty, extremely nice, and normally a very good mother; she has worked for me as a Personal Care Attendant for some my clients for 2 years and been excellent. She had been sober for the past 3 years.
Well, like a lot of addicts it takes associating with the wrong people to get started again, and when your drug of choice is crack, it is a little bit tougher. So, she went on crack bender this weekend. Now being a welfare mom, and part time PCA, she doesn’t have a lot of money, not that crack around here is that expensive . . . So, I get a call this morning, early, it is her. She has lost her high, run out of money or things to barter for drugs (did you realize you could “rent” your car for drugs? I guess dealers around here will allow you to loan them your car for the amount you owe them to do drug runs in it, is a an interesting system and sure enough, they dropped it right off where they said they would, keys under the front seat, after her debt was paid), she had tried to get in touch with her residential case manager but she was not in yet. so of course, she got tranferred to me. She had come down, come down hard after a 6 day crack binge, was now totally regretting he decisions of the past 6 days, at some dealers house, and needed a ride out of there. Luckily the residential case manager had walked in just as I was talking to her; she had to ask the dealer where she was at, but she found out easily, so we went to get her.
Where was she at your ask? In Fairhaven, is a really quiet residential neighborhood, about 3 - 4 blocks from my parent’s house, the house I grew up in. So we head to there, and sure enough, it is this cute green bugalow, with a very unkept lawn, and blankets as shades in the windows. Called my mother when I got home, she went to check it out; Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
So we brought the client to her parent’s house, and I got her into a residential detox on the Cape. How did this happen? Well of course she met up with an old drug friend, whose husband is fisherman (fisherman around here make pretty good money), and of course they had to go party.
How was your day?
Yeah so kids, don’t do crack . . . or heroin.
Also helped another client move today, yeah, he had a porn magazine stash too, like the last one I moved. I feel bad for these poor people who can’t afford the internet, wasting money on porn.
Something else . .
I have a job interview next Tuesday. Bristol Community College psuedo recruited me to part time teach Human Services. Very interested, if they can work around my full time job. Wish me luck. Always wanted the title of Professor.

That’s like saying the Superbowl is the highlight of Superbowl weekend. Kinda obvious. Look, she could have promised to sh*t in everyone’s mouth and she still would have been the highlight. She’s a hundred watt bulb in a room of hippy scented candles. Don’t you wish she was running? As a hated Republican, I’m glad she’s not. Murky, no I am not glad she is running, and you must be proud of your Albino Midget D Student with Dementia, I am waiting for him to slit his own throat and bring in uncle Mitt as his VP. Maybe it is just me, but McCain is starting to remind me of 2nd term Ronald Reagan, only ugly.

The Mood of Red Sox Nation
Interesting pickup today by the Sox, especially with Drew going on the DL, and the fact, Jason Bay (who has been awesome) has played every game since the trade. Also better batter than Coco. Sox are about to win 2 in row in the Bronx, and pretty much bury the Yankees, and slowly but surely taking Tampa. Go Sox.
Very interesting team without Manny Ramirez. Better balanced and Youkilis has taken up the power slack.

Speaking from the very myopic vantage point of 5 months of sobriety, I am starting to notice things about addiction that I have never noticed before. I have a really good friend that has a serious alcohol problem and she is the biggest bullshit slinger in the freaking world. Everything she says and does is jockeying for position to get that next drink. I am constantly calling her on it and she gets so pissed off. The other day she had to go for a drug/alcohol UA. She convinced them that she couldn’t pee with someone watching her so they told her to go home and come back the next day. The real problem was that it was after lunch and she was already drunk. She went back the next day–early in the morning and passed the test with flying colors.
Addicts are great bullshit artists.
It’s sad when addicts have children that are depend on them. I can laugh at Amy Winehouse wandering the streets of London in her bra, but at least she doesn’t have children at home wondering where their mother is.

Mike: Yeah, I have clients that do that. With addiction, you see two things, people fall back with the people they got high with and relapse, or they change their lifestyle and friends and generally succeed. Alchohol, Crack, and Heroin are are very addictive. I worked with a guy who was 18 years sober from Heroin. He had become a drug counsellor and was very good at his job. All it took, was for him to get into a relationship with a 6 month sober recovering heroin addict, thinking he could change her life . . . what happened? She dragged him down back into Heroin . . Don’t wan’t to put full blame on her he ultimate put himself there.
Look at my Brother, Dr. Murk. Alchoholic, now more than a year sober. Luckily for him, I rarely drink, and when I do, not around him, his wife doesn’t drink, and his friends that do, don’t drink around him out of respect. Good support system.
Rag: This client, it broke my heart. She said it herself. Once she took the first hit, nothing mattered but getting high, she did not think about how she was screwing up her life, her kids, etc.

Congrats!!! That’s awesome. I hit two years in about a month. Addiction is a funny thing. You wake up one day and you’re the addict. I love people who think addiction and breaking addiction is a choice. I drank because I had to. I quit because I was sick.
Yeah, I made the choice to start, but so did Malach. Whycome he isn’t an addict? No one knows.
That’s a very sad story Malach (about the mom who did crack), and it got me really angry too (about her leaving her kids and simply disappeared), that’s really irresponsible.
If I were to rule this country, I would have shot her right there and then. One less irresponsible human, one less sad story to pass it on to her kids, one better human the kids will be become.
Problem with addiction is that is knows now boundaries. It hits the poor, the rich, the black and white. It does not care if you live in Florida or Maine and it does not care if you are succeessful at your job or a house wife and mother. It is an equal opportunity disease. That is what most refuse to acknowledge, it is a disease. You choose it no more than diabetes or a heart attack.
Relapses suck and hit you from out of no where. I have a friend who fell off the wagon…maybe even dove off of it for one night. But boy, he did it all in one night. He felt so humiliated and digusting the next day. He didn’t need to be shot. He needed our support and love and help to get him get back on track and let him know his life is worth living and he is important to someone.
It has been 9 months and still clean. We are very proud of him too.
For the addicts that don’t care, or destroy their kids lives in the process, it is unfortunate and sad. And if jail is the only thing that will stop them, so be it. But we must try to have some compassion towards those who are addicts. You have no idea what happened to them prior to their addiction to lead them down that road. Often its a desperate attempt to self medicate to numb feelings from some pretty horrific shit that happened to them that most of us could never comprehend.
Old Indian Saying “Judge me not till you walk a mile in my mocassins.”
And yes, I’ll say this one “Let the one with no sin throw the first stone.”
Unless you are President Bush, then none of that counts and we should charge him with a few federal and internation crimes.
