You are listening too . . .
A beautiful little song by Willie Nelson, called Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground. It is dedicated to a friend of mine, Mary G. who passed away a day ago.
Mary G.
Mary G. was a woman with Down Syndrome who I met 15 years ago. Mary in a way, was very typically Down Syndrome, short, overweight, and a bit of a speech impediment, but she was much more. Mary never gave up, and she always had a smile, a greeting, a well wish.
Mary was about 10 years older than me, but up until the last year of her life, she was always busy, busier than me half the time. Special Olympics; hanging out with her brother; dances, parties; and a 15 year Career at Wendy’s where they loved her, even with her limitations. And she had limitations. Like many with Down Sydrome she had heart issues; so she was slow, and could only work strenously for certain amounts of time and would get really tired. That was one of the leading causes of her weight.
Mary never let it get her down and kept going, and up until the past few years, she played unified softball. Now don’t get wrong, she was awful; limited athletic skills, could hardly swing a bat, took about year to run to first; but she always gave it her all, and when she was too tired to play, she would be on the bench yelling and screaming for her teamates . . . that was Mary.
Mary did some amazing things at softball. She would get one or two hits a season, but the most memorable event was she caught a rocket out in left field to the amazement and cheering of those that watched her (I think that is the first time I ever saw her catch a ball on a fly). She would help others when she was the one who needed help.
When Mary got cancer 4 years ago, she still had that same attitude, the same greeting, a smile, even continuedplaying softball, all through losing her hair, and what physical skills she had that continued to deteriorate. When the cancer returned with a vengeance 2 years later, again, smiles, glad tidings, even though they had to amputate her right hand. Well, she lost he softball career; but she still went to every practice, every game, and even showed Malach her cool bionic hand and how it worked (I was so jealous).
The past year was ever rougher for Mary. She was sick all the time, and very weak at times, and after losing her hand, she went on Medical Leave, much to the chagrin on Wendy’s. But she still went to practice, still attended games, even though it made her so sick, we had to call an ambulance.
I found out this past weekend, her cancer was really pissed off this time and returned; Doctor’s gave he six months. My mother-in-law saw her recently, and said still, she was the same old Mary. She died quietly Monday.
RIP Mary . . . you will be missed, and we will dedicate our season to you.
Dear Malach

Malach’s Video of the Day
I am Malach and we are all f*cking Obama

I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of Mary – she sounds like a great girl who touched lots of lives.
There is something very tragic or even special when someone like Mary comes into our lives and touches it so profoundly and then leaves us all early. You wonder what the lesson was, why did she have to go so soon, what could have been.
I believe that you stay on this planet only until your mission is complete. And your passing can be part of that mission and how it may unite others after they are gone. It sounds like Mary had many gifts to give, but her job here was done for now and it was time for a vacation.
It was not her ability to do great things, but her ability to do things that were great!
Reading the comments and this blog, I think you picked the perfect song dude.
Kitty: She was, she was one of those people, a person who had down syndrome and was mentally retarded that was a good person for people uncomfortable with that stuff to become comfortable with it.
MI: See Kitty comment, but that her, even the customers loved her at Wendy’s, she transcended her Downs look, and her gruff appearance to make people see she was a person, and was always pleasant.
Dr. John: hence the song. Willie rocks, I got to thank my Father and Brother for leading me to him
I will check that out a bit later!!!
Malach, my brother. Sorry to hear about Mary. I don’t know how you’d feel about it, but I’ll pray for her. Life is full of crap lately.
I reaally love your blog. Check out my website
Toyi: Do it woman!
Murk: Thanks, not sure if you ever met Mary or not.
“MI: See Kitty comment, but that her, even the customers loved her at Wendy’s, she transcended her Downs look, and her gruff appearance to make people see she was a person, and was always pleasant.”
Not sure what you are trying to convey there. I was saying that is was sad she is gone. Certainly had nothing to day negative about her or her life. Nor question her ability to be seen as a whole person…but rather she was a whole person with a whole life that will be missed.
Sorry I ment to say see Kitty’s comment I left her above.
