KMP Softball Update
What a nasty weather game again.  40 MPH winds, 45 degrees.  I pitched much better and the wind was consistent.  It was so gusty at points that the ball would move 10′ from where you threw it.  We did win 18 – 10.  There were 2 walks, but that was all wind.  I went 4 – 5  with a walk at the plate, we are now 4 – 0.   Oh and some people have asked me where the team name, The Kombucha Mushroom People came from . .  here you go:

So at the local Social Security Office, there is a new employee named Ms. Farder.  Now I have a client who is on SSI whose last name is Belcher.  I am try to get her cased transferred to Ms. Farder, so I can call them Farder and Belcher.  Yes, I am too easily amused.

So
Most of you know, my employer works a 4 day work week, which rocks.   Today I did work though about 7 hours.  I went to a local grade school and did presentation on my employer and homelessness for Kindergarten through 6th Grade.  The kids were great and it was a lot of fun, especially the Kindergarten.

USA, USA, USA
So the US Hockey sent a message to Canada by ABSOLUTLEY DEMOLISHING Finland to advance to the Gold Medal round.  Canada is playing Slovakia tonight, winner plays the US.  Of course Tim Thomas gave up the only goal in the game to Finland after Miller was taken out, story of his life.

It is still a real shame, that watching all these games has gotten me back into hockey, by the NHL can’t duplicate it without contracting at least 6 teams if not more.

Pride (In the Name of Love) from U2.  A song of course about Martin Luther King (with references to Jesus, Gandhi, and JFK tossed in), it still bring a lump to my throat even though I have heard it a billion times.  Bono apologized in the 80′s for the line “Early Morning April 4″ and King was assassinated around 6PM and now in concert he changes it to “Early Evening”.

What can I say about Dr. Martin Luther King?  One of the greatest and most important people of the 20th Century.  How far have we come?  Well we have a black President (sorry bi-racial) starting tomorrow.  A man who to me seems to be a lot like MLK.  Of course MLK died 4 years and 1 day before I was born, but my parents can remember those times, as well as my Memere.  My Father who was born in 1949 can remember even up North, racial tension, separation, open bigotry here in the City of New Bedford.  I am lucky as I was never raised to see color, even though I grew up in White Suburban America.  My Pepere who was born in the 1910′s could probably remember a much different America.  He also had his own prejudices, but never exposed me to them or wasn’t open about them.  As he got older, he became much more accepting of different races and ethnicity.  My kids, my kids have no prejudices.  We have friends of all kinds (color, ethnicity, sexual orientation), and they are growing up in a much more racially diverse climate than even I did.  I still find it amazing when I ask them to describe someone to me, they never mention the color of their skin.

And now again, we have our first black President.  Now I am no fool, there is still bigotry and racism on and about the US, but think of this . . even if every black person in American voted from Obama; that is only like 12% of the US population.  I have said that I did not think I would ever see a black President in my lifetime because I know too many people who have said to me they would not vote for a Black Candidate.  These are rational non racist people too . . .

I wonder if King had lived to see this . . what his reaction might be.  I also wonder and hope, Obama becomes the model for young minorities to follow . . . In the name of love . .

As for the Inauguration tomorrow . . . I know some people are going to take me to task for this . . . but there is this electricity in the air, like a history changing event is about to occur, and maybe, just perhaps a President this country has not had in a VERY long time.

Games
Several people were confused about the Arkham Horror post from yesterday.  That is good is a complex game.  I propose the lot of you come here and we can play it.  I really don’t know how else to show you it, unless I could create a flash version of it.  I will be doing another on Android later this week.

So I bet most Hockey Fans out there, at least long time ones can’t wait to see a guy like Zdeno Chara bury Claude Lemieux through the boards.  Claude makes Steve Avery look like Goldilocks.

Sean Avery
So, for those of you who aren’t familiar with this, Sean Avery of the Dallas Stars was suspended 6 games by the NHL.  Not for a cheap hit, taking drugs, or something like that; but for saying that players on the Calgary Flames liked his “sloppy seconds”.  You see, Avery dated Elisha Cuthbert, and now she is dating Dion Phaneuf of the Calgary Flames.

6 games.  And yes, Avery is a character and an asshole, and makes Claude Lemiuex look like Mother Theresa; and yes, he is a locker room cancer, but 6 games?

This is the problem with the modern NHL.  10+ years ago, that would have been taken care of by the Flames themselves, on the ice, and also the Dallas Stars players.  Avery would of been pounded on, and eventually fought by one of their tough guys.  The NHL is sterilizing it’s product.  I mean seriously, who did Avery insult?  A couple of people?  What’s next?  Seriously, can you see this happening in any other sport?

Now there is the whole issue of Dallas being sick of Avery and trying to get out of his contract too . . .

How’s the Weather
So we got our first bit of snow here in Southeastern MA today, only about 1 – 2″, but is was fun to see and easy to shovel, and right now it is cold, about 24 degrees.  Might get some more snow later this week.

Da Price o’ Gas
Yeah, I got gas at a $1.62 a gallon over at BJ’s on Friday.  You know it is really exciting to see $20 get me 12+ gallons as opposed to like 4.5.

What is more shocking is it is only half!
I am 36, I play video games, my brother and wife are 34 and play, all my friends play, my kids play, my mother and father who are in the late 50′s play.  You see, I got my first video games system in the late 70′s early 80′s; Intellivision and the entire family wore that thing out.  My neighbors, one had various Atari systems including the 2600, another had ColecoVision, my Memere and Pepere even had the Odyssey system.  I even had friends with the Commodore 64.  I grew up playing video games, I even remember arcades, back when there was one of them in every mall, in every town.  And we just moved on up after Intellivision, the Orginal Nintendo, the Super Nintendo, the Nintendo 64, The Wii (skipped the Game Cube); Playstation I and II, Sega Genesis, even had a Dreamcast in college, though we spent more time playing DOOM on the PC.
